Mid-Generation Nintendo Switch was Planned but Cancelled

“There was some sort of mid-generation Switch update planned at one point”
by Joe Wilcock on December 29, 2022

As of September 30, 2022, the Nintendo Switch has shipped a whopping 114 million units. Only the PlayStation 4, Game Boy, Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2 have outsold Nintendo’s hand-held hybrid. Needless to say, the Switch has been a resounding success since its release in 2017, so it comes as a surprise that it is yet to receive a mid-generation upgrade much like its competitors.

Despite receiving an OLED version in 2021, which enhances the fidelity of the Switch’s screen, Nintendo has idly stood by as the PlayStation 4 upgraded to the PlayStation Pro and Xbox received the Xbox One S/X. Now that we’re deep into the newest console generation with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, what is Nintendo’s next move?

Digital Foundry’s John Linneman understands that a Switch successor is in fact on the way, but not for another couple of years at least. According to Linneman, Nintendo was working on a mid-generation iteration before it was cancelled:

“So I think at one point internally, from what I can understand from talking to different developers, is that there was some sort of mid-generation Switch update planned at one point and that seems to be no longer happening, and thus it’s pretty clear that whatever they do next is going to be the actual next-generation hardware.”

- John Linneman, Digital Foundry

Nintendo had another solid outing this year, showcasing their talents on an ageing console with hits such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Splatoon 3. However, as developers begin to utilise the power of the current generation capabilities, Nintendo will need to find a new home for their blockbuster titles to keep up. Or they will break the mould and innovate in ways only Nintendo know how, in any case, we can expect some form of update this year potentially.
